"I listened to the man who barricaded himself into the
spare room every night. i heard from the man who to
run out of the house with the kids. i saw photographs
of a man who was stabbed by his girlfriend. i was told
about the man who was beaten by his wife with a
hoover. men telling my story. the story of sleepless
nights, endless fights,put downs, shut-ups lock-in and
lock-outs. for two hours i listened and i talked."

Based on the true stories of men who have been
victims of domestic violence in same sex and
heterosexual relationships.
40 stories distilled into dionne and steve - that
play out this grand opera of normality in their
terraced house- the play could be eastenders yet is
more like one flew over the cuckoo's nest.
the poetry of the ordinary meets the absurdity of
Kafka.
It charts Steve's journey from being an enthusiastic
lover and father into a shell of a man-
psychologically tormented, tortured and physically
abused by Dionne we follow him to the edge of
existence.

it is a desperate dialogue that exposes the myth of
male invulnerability. it delves into the mind of the
perpetrator of abuse and traces the scars of childhood
as they inflict the wounds of adulthood.
it is also a parable of modern day religion- how
individuals crave power over another and trap
innocence and destroy the will of another to maintain
their own power and place by forcing subservience by
any means.
It aims to transcend sex, gender, sexual orientation,
race, class, religion and asks what makes us human
and what makes us inhuman.
