Patrick has been offered a new commission by the National Theatre of Wales for his play "THE CRUSADES" . It promises to be his most radical, provocative, challenging, humorous and dangerous work yet. " This is the most exciting news I have had for years and i am proud to be involved in the NTW's programme for the next two years and working with John McGrath and his fantastic team" said Patrick on hearing the news. He describes it as " A fusion of The Life of Brian, Four Lions, Accused (Jimmy McGovern) and The Plague by Albert Camus"
He will be setting out on the road this Autumn/Winter performing all over the UK with his "throatcursed" tour. Details to follow shortly.

A NEW POEM
THE LIE
I found the lie again this morning
I shouldn't have looked
but i'm sorry, I did
went searching under beds
and amongst names,
it lay so still, I wasn't sure if it was still alive
so I poked it,
held it, almost cradled it
took it outside
into the bright sunlight
gave it the kiss of life
it grew and grew
stood up once more
stretched and looked at me
then walked away, shouting names, dates, times, clues and crimes,
I ran after it,
clawing, stumbling through thicket,
tried to stop it going
knocked it to the floor kicked and punched it
til it lay lifeless once more,
I picked it up,
carried it inside,
as before,
I hide it in a secret place
closed the door
swallowed the key
and sat in the sun
i know where the lie is now,
but I can't tell anyone
what I have done-
THE JUST
(for Sakineh Mohammada Ashtiani)
this is just the sound of a pen scratching
this is just the noise of ink leaking
but hold still, listen, wince pray
as the Just scatter their prayers to prostrated minions
and sermons are spat to subservient millions
like sand thrown in eyes,
into Just hearts and Just minds
as Just hands pick up Just stones and are
just thrown onto just a woman
who just happened to talk to a man or just walk in daylight near a house where a man looked through a window or received a phone call from a
man
and so
The Just adjudicate and
just sentenced her to Just stoning
and take her to a place she did not know
and just buried her up to her neck in the Just earth
and the Just people just gathered just passed just wandered up to
just have a look and just picked up a Just rock and
just threw it and it just hit this woman that they only just met
and just murdered her who had
merely
talked or walked laughed or cooked written read or worked next with to by a mere man who was not her husband and and and
listen listen l is t e n
to the Just prayers for her soul,
the Just decisions the Just snarls, the Just smiles of
The Just men who
just murdered, just stoned, just annhilated an innocent woman
for JUST being a woman
so just listen to the Just crowd the Just crack the Just snap the Just scream
the Just silence
JUST LISTEN then,
just stop just stop
and then, and only then will justice be done;

Patrick Jones: Tongues For A Stammering Time
This CD was the complete opposite of what I expected. It doesn’t matter what I expected and it’s not to say that I was disappointed, just that I put the CD into the player perhaps thinking I was going to hear some solo singer-songwriter angst but I was surprised to say the least. Patrick Jones is a poet for those not in the know like me. And a playwright too. And his works are controversial, provocative, expressive and gritty but with a beauty that only someone so good at their craft can achieve. So, what does the CD sound like? Well, it’s not just ‘Spoken Word’. It’s subtle and it’s loud and it’s folky and there’s even some thrash metal in there so don’t expect me to pigeonhole it. The musical soundtracks and scores range from acoustic songs to experimental sounds that not only accompany but capture the brutality and destruction considered so thoughtfully within some of the harsh subject matter. I found some of the listening a challenge, not so much because of the style of music accompanying the poems but because of the unflinching nature of the writing. Violence against men, the war in Iraq and religious fundamentalism are just some of the subjects covered amongst some of the most personal poems that push the boundaries and challenge the listener whilst keeping the intimacy and personal views held to make the listener both think about what they have heard and afterwards contemplate their own humanity. With a musical score that has the likes of Martyn Joseph, Billy Bragg and a couple of the Manic Street Preachers involved, you know the music has not been added as an after-thought but carefully considered to contribute to the listeners experience of the poems. It was the less experimental scores that were music to my ears though and the likes of Amy Wadge adding flesh to the bones of Jones’ words to give a different interpretation to Jones’ Mankind. And a sampled voice of Thatcher on The Healing House before the unmistakable guitar sound of Billy Bragg creeps in to bring the song/poem to its conclusion again served as an example of how to add poetry to music, of how to make a CD of ‘spoken word’ interesting, innovative and exciting whilst losing nothing of the thoughts expressed. Me, I checked out www.patrick-jones.net and read some of the poems silently to myself. And I recommend you do that yourself if you are able. Then get the CD and hear Patrick Jones read them in his own accent.
